Traditional Music Day Course for Leaving / Junior Cert Students
This course covers all aspects of traditional music from its historical background, regional styles and ornamentation to the contemporary music of today. The programme consists of three lectures followed by practical demonstrations in the main instruments of traditional music.
Lectures include the following:
- The evolution of Irish music over the past few decades with examples of the many different strands of Irish music on the contemporary scene.
- Foundation instruments of pipes, fiddle and flute. Demonstration of each with reference to background, technique, ornamentation etc.
- The harp – a detailed analysis of its importance in Irish music, an exploration of regional styles and the factors which distinguish them.
- Presentation on sean nós singing, accordion, concertina, banjo etc. and the role of accompaniment in Irish music.
Practical Demonstrations Students are divided into small groups and are assisted by tutors to examine, play and discuss the techniques of playing the various instruments. Students also have free access to our state of the art exhibition area with audio-visual, interactive screens and traditional music archive. The day ends on a lighter note with a music session/céilí dancing and an invitation to any musicians in the group to join in with our musicians.
