Four Generations – Sheila O Dowd
‘Four Generations’ represents the musical memoirs of Sheila O’Dowd(nee Regan). This book was recently launched in Sligo and is currently available from the following outlets; * Ceoláras Coleman, Gurteen, Co. Sligo, * Cois na hAbhna, Ennis, Co. Clare, * An Cutúrlann, Belgrave Square, Monkstown, Co. Dublin. Dedicated to the memory of her father Frank Regan from whom she received her love of traditional music. This book contains staff notation of some 90 tunes together with comments and reminiscences by the author who is renowned fiddle player from South Sligo. In a foreword by her son multi instrumentalist Shamie O”Dowd he describes the playing of both his parents Sheila and the late Joe O’Dowd as follows; “Dad’s playing was quite boisterous, immediately uplifting, full of unfettered beauty, and frequently bordered on being defiant, though while never quite as far as defiant, it nailed its colours to the mast in no uncertain terms. Mam’s playing, on the other hand, has to be listened to in the way that you would listen to a long story unfold. To look for a quick fix, so often demanded by elements in today’s cultural environment, is to misunderstand completely”. We highly recommend this book to all.
